Why go to the châteaux of the Loire ? Well, obviously, they're majestic monuments, an ensemble unlike any other on the planet. With more than 3.3 million visitors per year, the group of 42 chateaux that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Loire Valley is one of the most popular tourist destinations in France outside Paris itself.

Le Lude castle
Le Lude Castle

Built from the 10th century onwards on the banks of the Loir, Le Lude Castle is now owned by the Count and Countess of Nicolaÿ. It is a remarkable reminder of the evolution of French architecture. The inside of the castle is richly decorated...

The house is surrounded by superb gardens, an ideal place to take a walk or enjoy a moment's reverie. Events for your diary: the Gardeners' Festival in the first weekend of June, and the Kitchen and Gourmet Garden Days in July and August.

Le Mans
Le Mans

Gareth Huw Davies discovers one of France’s too-long-overlooked old cities. His must-do list includes a mighty chunk of Roman wall, a thrilling night-time light show, the tomb of Richard the Lionheart’s queen and a very special tea room. And could we mention a certain 24-hour car race ?

Puy du Fou
Puy du Fou : theme park

At 1h45 away. When you’ve watched a Viking ship rise from beneath the water, seen a castle go down in flames and had birds of prey whizz by inches from your head and it’s not even lunchtime, you know you’re somewhere a little different.

Puy du Fou, is not a traditional theme park in that there are no roller coasters or rides. Instead the park is given over to historical shows and reconstructions.
